Biblical Truths

The Land of Beginning Again…And Again

Do you ever wish you could start over? Go back and redo or UNDO something? (I mean, WHO DOESN’T??…P.S. if you answered no, you are in denial…just sayin’). I know I sure do!!

Recently I read a poem shared on a friend’s Facebook page. You know how sometimes you see a billboard, read a quote, or watch a video clip of an inspiring story and it just REALLY hits you? Like strikes a chord with you so deep that you’d swear if it came in an envelope it would be personally addressed to you?

Yeah, that’s exactly what happened when I read “The Land of Beginning Again“. It was timely, to say the least.

While reading it, I visited this land in my mind.

It was a land of lush green valleys, rushing clear water, with rocks glistening in the sun. The sun was shining brightly on the backdrop of a periwinkle sky but with a light breeze, it provided warmth on your face and shoulders but wasn’t overpowering. The racing water rushed down the cliff only to transform into giant white clouds…leaving behind a fine mist which created a prism-like affect dancing with the sun’s rays. Ultimately relaxing into a body of water a million different shades of blue, green, and purple. So many vibrant shades of crystal clear water that even Crayola himself couldn’t name them all. ONLY our Creator would be able to give each variation of color a unique descriptor.

There are a million different variations of our mistakes. The kind with carnage left exposed in every direction for all to see. Damage for miles. And miles. And miles. Leaving nothing untouched and unturned.

ONLY our Creator can piece us back together after we’ve been wronged or hurt.
ONLY our Creator can bring new hope when all feels lost.
ONLY our Creator can erase the mess we’ve made of things in our past.
ONLY our Creator has the power to completely forget, forgive, and restore us to the perfect being He created us to be.
ONLY our Creator is willing to bathe us in His mercy and cleanse us with His grace.
ONLY our Creator can take us to “The Land of Beginning Again”.

He meets us there with:

  • Open eyes anxiously awaiting our return.
  • Open arms to hug us and hold us.
  • Open ears to hear our confessions, Godly sorrow, and fears.
  • Open hands to give us all good things.
  • Open door to welcome us home.
  • Open-ended…that we may ALWAYS start over…AGAIN…AND AGAIN…AND AGAIN…

Luke 10:25-37

As you start 2018, I hope you evaluate your past hurts and those you’ve hurt. The mistakes you’ve made and those of which you have been a victim. THEN, I hope you will extend mercy and grace to those who have wronged you, as well as yourself. Give yourself & others permission to travel to “The Land of Beginning Again”. It’s never too late to make a u-turn and start over.

Besides…let’s face it…some people need more “begin agains” than others. It just takes some of us more chances than others to get things through our thick head. We don’t always deserve second chances but thank God, He is willing to forgive us. For that reason, we MUST be willing to return the favor.

For those who are interested in delving a bit deeper into the poem and getting to know Louisa Fletcher, check out the article that beautifully describes the author herself and what prompted her writing it.

The Land of Beginning Again

I wish that there were some wonderful place
In the Land of Beginning Again.
Where all our mistakes and all our heartaches
And all of our poor selfish grief
Could be dropped like a shabby old coat at the door
and never put on again.

I wish we could come on it all unaware,
Like the hunter who finds a lost trail;
And I wish that the one whom our blindness had done
The greatest injustice of all
Could be there at the gates
like an old friend that waits
For the comrade, he’s gladdest to hail.

We would find all the things we intended to do
But forgot, and remembered too late,
Little praises unspoken, little promises broken,
And all the thousand and one
Little duties neglected that might have perfected
The day for one less fortunate.

It wouldn’t be possible not to be kind
In the Land of Beginning Again,
And the ones we misjudged
and the ones whom we grudged
their moments of victory here,
Would find in the grasp of our loving hand-clasp
More than penitent lips could explain…

So I wish that there were some wonderful place
Called the Land of Beginning Again,
Where all our mistakes and all our heartaches,
And all of our poor selfish grief
Could be dropped like a shabby old coat at the door
And never put on again.

While Google searching the poem to give proper credit, I stumbled upon this little gem…take a listen…especially charming to those who love black and white movies and Bing Crosby…

In the land of beginning again, where broken dreams come true…
